On September 27, 2026, Scott “Smokin’” Silz — founder of Hot Mix Entertainment and an original member of the legendary Hot Mix 5 — was inducted into the Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum on Route 66. The honor recognizes a career that helped shape Chicago’s music history and, for more than four decades, has kept the city dancing.
From WBMX to the Hall of Fame
In the early 1980s, five DJs at Chicago’s WBMX 102.7 FM changed the way the world danced. As one of the original Hot Mix 5, Scott helped pioneer the radio mix-show format and the sound that became house music — a sound still played in clubs on every continent today. He went on to become a familiar voice on WBMX, V103 and 107.5 WGCI, and a fixture in Chicago’s most iconic nightclubs.
The induction joins a list of recognitions that tie Scott’s story to the city itself: a 2007 City of Chicago resolution naming Hot Mix among the top mobile DJ services in the country, and honorary street designations — “The Hot Mix 5 Way” and “Scott Smokin’ Silz Blvd.” — at Columbus Drive and Balbo Avenue.
From Chicago Music History to Your Wedding
In 1982, Scott took that same passion for music into something more personal: celebrations. Hot Mix Entertainment has since performed more than 750 weddings and thousands of events across Chicagoland — and Scott still personally hosts and performs the celebrations he books. The name on the contract is the name behind the booth.
That’s what this honor really means for our couples and clients. The instincts that filled Chicago radio and packed the city’s biggest dance floors — knowing exactly which song lands at the right moment, when to let a toast breathe, and how to keep every generation on their feet — are the same ones running your night.
Thank You, Chicago
This recognition belongs to everyone who has danced with Hot Mix over the years: the couples, families, schools, venues and companies who trusted us with their most important moments. Thank you for more than four decades of music and memories.
